Places of Power, Constellations of Cognition & Motifs of Metamorphosis.’


Palenque is one of the more well known sites of the ancient Maya world. It has been the focus of numerous alternative history theories, but perhaps more interestingly, it was the resting place of the longest reigning Maya king, Pakal, and his wife (a ruler in her own right), Lady Tz’akbu Ahau.
Based on local symbolism, this essay explores how these two individuals transformed Palenque into a centre of transcendental meditation, utilising concepts of mythical and historical time and motifs of metamorphisis - as depicted in the site’s bas reliefs and incense burners.
